Question: Sat is good character or spiritual practices important on our path?
Sat: Well, you see, it all depends [on] where you are standing in your evolution. If you are a villain, a mean and hurtful person, then in order to be able to attend to your ritual and your religion, you need to watch that character and try to do more service, try to be kinder, etc., to be able to even get interested in worship! But you get to a point where the soul thirsts after freedom, not good and bad; the soul is tired of good and bad, it wants eternal freedom, eternal peace! At that time, it is not a question of bad and good, fixing this and fixing that; you transcend it. They call it the path of Jhana which is the path of wisdom; you are no longer trying to trim the branches and make the tree pretty.
You just want to eliminate the whole thing and this is our teaching- when a soul is ripened and has already gone through the purification of character, it can no longer hurt people and feel good about it. It no longer wants to steal and take things from people that do not belong to it. So, in one stage of humanhood, yes, it is important to start a religious or spiritual path. But then you get to the point that you are ripened enough that you know what character is; it is ideas that the thinker has accepted. You want to get rid of the thinker by transcending the thinker to the Ultimate, rather than trying to make the thinker think better!
